How do we create that restorative storytelling? What can we, as individuals or a collective, do to help resist this capture, to reclaim and redirect stories back toward a path we actually want to walk?

Made this a second comment since it's a different subject. (And we can now see that neither HTML nor underscores cause italics, so I'll stop.)

I don't think compassion fatigue (for lack of a better term) is a 21st century thing. I think it's a 20th century thing that has gotten worse. It's the main reason I try to avoid international news. There is nothing I can do about typhoon victims in Jakarta. I don't need to know about it. The entire continent of Africa is a giant compassion pit. No matter what makes you feel horrible, it's happening somewhere in Africa. Slave markets? Check. Christians being murdered? Check. Cutting people's hands off? Check. White lynching? Check. Black lynching? Check. Pointless warfare? Check. Starving children? Check. Kleptocratic government? Check. It's horrid and I ignore it as much as possible so I have some compassion left for the homeless guy downtown.

I may not be able to italicize, but I can edit my comment. To bring this more on-topic: I don't care that Hamas attacked Israel. That's Israel's problem and they can deal with it however they'd like. I very much care that Jews are being attacked in the United States. That's not acceptable.
